Lenny and I went out and hit a few garage sales this morning, and I came home with this!
An elderly lady was having a garage sale and the whole garage sale was fabric and lace, all at 1/2 off the price marked. She said, " I have been sewing for 50 years and I am tired of it", as she sat embroidering some sort of table runner with Christmas colors. Hum..... I guess when sewing is that much a part of you, it would be very hard to completely give up even if you wanted to desperately!

I decided to make a skirt. Nothing fancy, but the tricky part is that I wasn't going to use a pattern. Soooo, this is what I ended up with.
One of the cool things about this is, the material is from a thrifted bed sheet from a couple posts ago, as well as the waist lining. The taffeta trim at the hem was bought at a garage sale with a bunch of bias tape. The only thing used on the skirt that wasn't thrifted is the thread.
I put this outfit together thinking I could wear the skirt with it when it's not 100 degrees outside, at the end of the summer.
And here is the detail of the taffeta hem:
OH!, I almost forgot! This skirt also sports one of those invisible zippers my last post talked about! Yeah!

Yesterday I decided to get up early and hit a few garage/estate sales before it got too late. (This is SO ironic! Even five years ago, I would have NEVER said something like that. As a child, my Dad used to drag us around to what seemed like EVERY garage sale in town and I very much disliked it. We would all be in the car heading somewhere to do something that would normally take 30 min, and it seems that 2 hours later we still hadn't completed the mission because EVERY garage sale my Dad saw, we had to look at. Looking back, it seems that the garage sale signs acted like paddles in a pinball game, flitting us from one garage sale to the next. Sorry Dad! But I love it now!) Anyway, much to my surprise, my sweetie decided to join me! (He REALLY likes to sleep in and getting up before 1030 or 11 is not like him.) So, out the door we were at 745, and it paid off:
I am not sure why, but I have a bias tape fetish. I love to have it and make it. This isn't even all of the bias tape I found! I have just as much tape in another bag that has been opened and partially used as well as another gallon bag of scrap lace. The fabric is a bed sheet that is very fine fabric indeed!

So, now I need to learn how to alter patterns as these are all about 2 sizes too small. Does anyone know of any good resources?

I was out on Monday and lookie what I found at one of our local shops. Let me show you, let me show you! The top two are bedsheets, and the bottom one is a tablecloth, I think!
Either way, hopefully they won't stay in this condition for long, all folded up and neat. I hope to have them on my cutting table soon.

A couple three weeks ago, I thrifted a cargo skirt that I didn't necessarily love, but really liked the material. It sat around for a while and I was thinking I would eventually use the fabric for something else, but then a miracle happened! The idea to refashion it instead struck me and so, refashioned it was. I apologize I do not have any before photos, so this description will have to do. The length of the original skirt was to my toes, and there was a slit in the back. Also, it was about 1-2 sizes too big. Here is the end result after slimming it down, sewing the slit in the back, chopping off about 5 inches, and adding ruffles (pink of course) to the bottom and around t
he cargo pocket.
I 
used my serger with a flatlock stitch to add the ruffle around the bottom and pocket. To do this and have the seam show, you place the wrong sides together instead of the right sides. Once you have serged the seam, you open it up and you have the flatlock on the outside and the inside is a ladder stitch. Very cool! (I have since cleaned the mirror I used here, yuck!)
